I continue to reflect on the Haiti experience and try and get myself back into the swing of things at work and home (home is still a disaster…hopefully on my day off tomorrow, that will change).
One of the unique pieces of Haiti 2008 was the presence of a new Christian, Shinyi “CC” Huang. CC was baptized just a few months ago. She is a citizen of Taiwan, in the states studying pharmacy at UB. She is brilliant: knows Chinese, Japanese and English (and now a lot of Creole). She takes a humongous amount of credit hours in a very difficult graduate program. She likes to dance. And I SO wish you could have seen her in Haiti: pure, unadulterated JOY. She took thousands of pictures (including a picture of every meal she ate). She gave lots of love to every child she met and used her gifts in the pharmacie at the orphanage to organize the medications and supplies there so they will more easily be used. As I watched CC in Haiti, I became very aware that it is probably a great gift to a new Christian to have a mission experience. I asked CC about this theory and she said,
“Oh yes, Sue. For many Christianity is a fashion that comes and goes. But when I am here with the people of Haiti I know it’s the real deal!”
I am sure that Haiti isn’t for everyone, but I am equally sure that serving others in the name of Jesus is one of the best gifts God has for His children. Part of my biggest focus in Transformation Ministries in the upcoming months is designing a path for people who are new to First Trinity and especially new to the faith. You can bet that service will be part of that journey!
One night in Haiti, we were sharing with each other our joys, challenges and God-sightings from that day. CC said, “My joy is that I feel God used me well today.” How awesome. May He use you well, today, too!
