Word Favs

The Bible is so incredibly alive and penetrating.  Never stops touching me. Never weakens or fades. Able.

Here’s some of my  favorite Scripture passages…would love to hear yours, too!

  •  2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness (NIV). Sweet promise.
  • Matthew 11:28-20 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly (MSG).” Kind words from my Jesus.
  • Lamentations 3:19-23 I remember my affliction and my wandering,  the bitterness and the gall I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness (NIV). Problems are big. God is bigger. I hear my mom’s voice singing “Great is Thy Faithfulness”…
  • Acts 17:28 For in Him we live and move and have our being (NIV). God is the only reality.
  • Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Nothing else but Jesus. That’s it for me.
  • Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (NIV). My cloud: Mom, Dad, Uncle John, Al Gunderman, Shar Kleinedler, Milt Burow, and more. Eyes on Jesus.
  • Romans 12:1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out (MSG). Transformation. God’s work. My reason for getting out of bed everyday.

Romans 12:1-2 - AMEN!
Another of my favorite verses is Colossians 3:17:
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

The Romans 12: 1-2 passage is one of my favs too…very freeing when I was younger and seeking what God wanted for my life. I realized that He wanted to show me and that it didn’t have to be a mystery.

I also am growing to like Colossians 2: 13-15: “When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the written code, with all its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; He took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” (NIV)

Another freeing passage. I heard Glenn Kaiser of the old (okay, really old!!!) rock group “Ressurrection Band” (later just “Rez Band” ;) say of this passage: “It’s an obscure passage that shouldn’t be!”

Be still and know that I am God…I should have a tatoo of it put on my arm…but I don’t like needles much…loved your blog!

My favs are Romans 8: 38,39 (you too!) and Proverbs 3:5,6: “Give thanks to the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways and he will direct your paths.”

Pete- I know a song that is to the words of Prov. 3:5-6, so now it’s running around in my head! Thanks for posting, brother-o-mine.

Pam- I love “Be still and know that I am God”, too! It was a verse that gave my mom so much peace in the last hours of her life. Thanks for reminding me of that.

My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It’s printed on the back of a pair of dogtags that I got from one of the guys when the PowerTeam came to First Trinity a couple years ago. That was the night I gave my life to Christ so it is a very important verse to me!
