Hair-raising

Bible

The first day of the Everyday Faith My Bible event was yesterday. Can I just say that Pam Stone and Marsha Peth are THE MOST incredibly prepared leaders I know? They have been working on powerpoints and refreshments and wrapping Bibles (kids get them at this event, use them with their families and then have them when they start Cornerstone Confirmation classes in 7th grade) and lobbying for space and setting up the room and getting props for an obstacle course and praying for the kids and families that would attend and thinking up activities and making prayer tents and on and on and on. Wendy Morris (overall team leader for Everyday Faith) has also been getting ready: praying and making signs and nametags and cheerleading for Pam and Marsha. Kathy Figini did the mailings and set up the class in our database and made the signs for the hallway.

My jobs were:

  • Make the coffee
  • Get the computer, speakers and projector ready to go

Seems pretty simple, huh? Well, long story, short: the computer went into hibernation very soon into the class. I went to mess with it a bit, trying to be unobtrusive while Marsha was holding forth to the class. I wiggled the power cord for my computer and nothing happened. Someone mentioned they were smelling smoke and then all of a sudden there were sparks coming out of my power cord. I yanked the cord out of the power strip and said, “It’s OK! It’s unplugged now.” One of the dads (Rich Reardon) stood up and came towards me and said, “Put it down right now. It’s NOT unplugged.” I had unplugged another cord rather than the power cord. Rich told me later he could tell that there was a charge going through me because my hair started to stand up on end. I also had a little burn on my finger. Jeepers. Just set up the computer/projector and make the coffee…that’s all I had to do.

At least the coffee was good. :-)

That little electrical charge was not even CLOSE to being the real power in the room, yesterday, though!!!! I can hardly stand the joy when I see these things:

  • Third and fourth graders with big grins on their faces because of special time spent with Mom and/or Dad and/or grandma. They are giddy with it.
  • Parents leaning over their child’s shoulder as they explore God’s Word together.
  • Parents willing to play the games and do the activities with their child–an hour of fun and relaxed time with other families and with the Word
  • Parents and kids learning that all they need to hear from God is the right tool (the Bible) and teamwork (their family is the team)

It is PHENOMENAL ministry, with HUGE leverage for the spiritual lives of kids and parents. And a little electrical fire can’t stop THAT!!!!!!!

It was SO much fun! Especially for my oldest(of 4) to have MOM AND DAD all to himself for that time! And then, in typical fashion for him, we couldn’t get his nose out of The Book for much of the rest of the day. And yet again, Sue reminds us that you don’t have to be perfect to be used of God in truly great ways! I LOVE THAT ABOUT YOU SUE! Hugs!

Thanks for the post, Darcy. It was fun to watch you and Eric and Caleb. God is good!!!1

Sue, I am shocked! At least Mr. Reardon wasn’t static. So that is what all the buzz was about. Sounds absolutely electrifying. Sorry I missed it.

I am so thankful for what God is doing in Everyday Faith! My favorite part: The excitement of the kids as they got their gift of a Bible and then seeing them rip open the wrappings and writing their names in them (like - wow, this is MY BIBLE!) and then looking through all the pages to see what exciting things they would find! And I’m thinking, wow, how great to come to God with that kind of eagerness, expecting something fantastic! So, I’m thinking that’s where we start next week! God has so prepared these kids’ and families’ hearts! My prayer is that God will show me what He wants them to discover. I am just so thankful and humbled to be participating in what He is already doing. And I am thankful that no one was electrocuted in the process!

I think I’m going to have to rent a third or fourth grader so I can join this class! It sounds exciting on SO many levels! God bless (and protect) your future sessions. : - )

Maybe we could use Rental of 3rd graders as a Crossroads fund raiser!! :-) Thanks for the post, Deb.
