I’m doing lots of prep this week for the Short Course that starts on Monday called “Water, Come Down”. For four Mondays we’ll be digging into water stories in the Bible (Red Sea crossing, Jordan Crossing, Jesus’ Baptism, Our Baptism). Today, I came across a great image for studying the Bible from Eugene Peterson in his book, “Eat This Book”. He mentions a Hebrew phrase in Psalm 40:6-
aznayim karitha li
This literally means, “ears Thou hast dug for me.” Here’s Peterson’s comment:
Translators routinely but timidly paraphrase : ‘Thou hast given me an open ear’ (RSV); ‘my ears You have pierced’ (NIV); ‘mine ears Thou hast opened’ (KJV). But the psalms poet was bold to imagine God swinging a pickax in our granite blockheads so that we can hear, really hear, what He speaks to us.”
What a great image!!! I know I have a granite blockhead at times! God, swing Your loving pickax and dig me some ears that will hear Your voice. Please!
P.S. Not too late to sign-up for the Short Course. Send me an email here and ask for the registration information!
